Electric Nerve Stimulation for Migraine Relief
Stimulating your nerves with Electric Nerve Stimulation (ENS) can be an effective way to reduce migraine pain, intensity, and frequency. A lot of research has been done on this and the results are very promising for most people. Studies have shown that electric stimulation can reduce pain levels by 3 points or more on a scale of 1 - 10. (1) This means that if you have a pain level of 9, your pain can be brought down to a 6 or even lower with brief stimulation. Many of my clients get even greater relief and decrease their pain levels from a 9 or 10, to a 2 or 3, within hours or days of working with my system.​​

Electrical Nerve Stimulation (ENS) Devices
​There are several ENS devices that can be used for migraines. These include electric acupressure/acupuncture pens, TENS units, and vagus nerve stimulators. I prefer to use electric pens because they are easy to use and allow us to target points precisely. Stimulating the right points is essential to get the best results, and the electric pens allow us to find the right points and directly stimulate the most important points. Electric pens also allow us to persoanlly tailor the stimulation of points to each persons needs. This is important because everyone is different and migraines symptoms vary from person to person. A person that has migraines and neck pain with no auras, requires different pressure points than a person that suffers from migraines with auras, nausea, and vomiting. Using electric pens allows us to get the exact points required for your unique migraine pain pattern.​

VNS Device
​TENS units and vagus nerve stimulators can also be useful but work in a more general way. TENS units have patches that are placed on the skin and are beneficial for many things including arthritis, period pain, muscle pain, neck and back pain, fibromyalgia, and more. However, because TENS uses larger patches it is not able to precisely stimulate some of the most useful pressure points for for migraines. For instance, there are many acupressure points in the ear for migraines and headaches, but it is not practical to place a TENS patch on the ear to reach the points. The TENS is simply not able to reach and target the exact points in the ears. What TENS can be useful for is alleviating neck and shoulder tension that may be associated with migraines and headaches for some people.

Vagus Nerve Stimulators (VNS) - There are a variety of VNS devices available and these are being used for conditions including anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy, depression, some digestive disorders, and even for decreasing high blood pressure. (Medical News Today; What to know about vagus nerve stimulation) I do sometimes recommend these devices to my clients as they can be very effective for the conditions listed above, and they can be a good supplemental method to use for some types of migraines.. However, like TENS units, VNS devices work in a more general way and are not made to stimulate very specific points throughout the head, ears, hands, feet, and body.
In summary, both TENS units and VNS can be useful for migraines, but they tend to work in a more general way and/or are designed for their own uses. However, acupuncture pens are specifically designed to be able to stimulate a variety of distinct acupuncture and acupressure points.
