Video 1 - Getting Started
Summary of Video 1
We use a variety of tools including TENS, electric pens, and acupressure pens.
Electric acupuncture pens may be used like a TENS but they require holding the pen on the point.
During the class, consider and learn how you can use different tools on different points to achieve the best results.
TENS units are generally most convenient because you can just place the TENS pads/clips on the points.
Electric pens give more mobility, and you can move from point to point more easily.
Different modes and settings on the devices can produce different results. Some people may get the best results by using a low frequency and intensity. Others may get better results with high frequency settings. We will discuss this more in other videos and as we progress through the class.
Video 2 - Contraindications for TENS
Summary of Video 2
- DO NOT USE TENS IF:
- You have a pacemaker or other electrical devices implanted in your body
- If you are pregnant
- If you have epilepsy, cancer, or DVT
- Do not use on broken, infected, or numb skin. Don't use on skin with poor circulation.
- Do not place electrodes on the front of the neck (carotid sinus), head, eyes, mouth, or directly over the heart.
- Do not use in the shower, bath, while driving, or operating machinery.
Video 3 - TENS Pads & Clips
Summary of Video 3
- Use small TENS pads on the hands and feet
- Use bigger pads on the arms and legs
- Ear clips can be used on the ears and hands
- Do not let TENS pads touch. They should be at least 1 - 2 inches apart.
- Clips on the ears may be closer and even as close as 0.5 inches. That is fine, but if you get skin irritation, use different points.
Video 4 - Possible Side Effects
Summary of Video 4
Possible side effects of TENS include:
- Skin irritation or burning sensation

- Don't put pads on wounds
Avoid Side Effects By:

- Not using the same points for more than 60 minutes per day
- Not using a high intensity that causes excessive pain
- DO NOT USE TENS ON THE FRONT OF YOUR NECK
Video 5 - TENS Waves & N or B Mode
Summary of Video 5
- Electricity moves like waves, and we measure it in Hertz (Hz) or frequency
- 1 Hz is the same as 1 wave per second
- Start using TENS at 1 Hz
- Low Frequency is 10 Hz or less
- High Frequency is 80 Hz - 130 Hz or more
- Low & High Hz release different kinds of natural pain killers in your body
- Change the Hz on your TENS every 3 days to avoid tolerance's to TENS
- Normal TENS uses one Hz setting. With a B-mode or Burst-mode, you can use low and high frequency together at the same time.
- Start with N setting and 1 Hz

Important Notes on Using Finger and Hand Points
1. Press the clips down to get a good contact before turning on the device.
