Pressure Points for Relieving Migraines

Several points can be used for migraines. Some of the most important ones are LI 4 or LK 22.05, GB 1, and points on the feet.

Depending on where the pain starts and how it progresses, will determine what points and methods to use. For almost any kind of headache, it is best to begin with LI 4 as it is one of the most critical points for getting relief. I recommend starting with the point on the opposite side from where you feel the most pain. For instance, if the pain is worse on the right side, start massaging LI 4 on the left side.

I suggest massaging in the local area for 3 - 5 minutes. You can alternate between holding the point and applying small movements. Begin by feeling around in the region of LI 4 to find the most tender spot. Once you find the most sensitive point hold it firmly for 30 seconds to one minute. Practice long slow exhalations as you hold the point. By focusing on breathing out, it helps to relax the nerves and this can be of benefit as well. Some migraines begin as tension headaches.

After applying acupressure to LI 4 for at least 3 minutes you can move to another point. Before moving to the next point take a few moments and up to 2 minutes to check in with yourself and see if the pain has changed in any way. First, notice is the pain has changed in intensity or location. If it has decreased in intensity that is great and we now know that LI 4 was effective. If the pain has changed location, note where it moved to.

Since migraines often begin in the temples, forehead, or eyes it is important to notice what specific region is most affected.

Suppose you have held LI 4 and got some pain relief in the forehead, but now you feel the pain more in the temples. After holding LI 4 I like to move to pressure points on the head. If the pain is in the temples, begin by massaging in small circles just to the side of your eyebrows. Notice if you feel any muscular tension in this area. While massaging in this region also observe to see if the pain is decreasing or increasing. A small percentage of people will experience more pain when they massage their heads. If this happens, stop and work on points on the hands or feet. Most people will be ok with massaging in the temples and will also experience some relief.

For people who feel pain more in the forehead than in the temples, you can massage GB 14 or UB 2 in the inner corner of the eyes. For those that have more pain in the sinuses the point ST 3 in the center of the cheeks can be a better choice.
